Martin Niemöller: Quote

This is an important quote, often read in synagogues at high holiday services. It echoes what I have been taught about the Jewish tradition of taking care of and standing up for each other. We are not judged what we do when we have easy choices to make; we are judged by whether we stand up for what is right when things are difficult.

“First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—
and there was no one left to speak out for me.”
