I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Tawfik Hamid in person at an AJC meeting. An Islamic thinker and reformer, and one-time Islamic extremist from Egypt, Dr. Hamid was a member of an Islamic terrorist organization, J.I., with Dr. Ayman Al Zawahiri, who later became the second in command of Al Qaeda. About 25 years ago, Dr. Hamid recognized the threat of radical Islam and the need for a reformation based on modern, peaceful interpretations of classical Islamic core texts.
Currently Dr. Hamid is a Senior Fellow and Chair for the Study of Islamic Radicalism at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. He is also the author of Inside Jihad: Understanding and Confronting Radical Islam.
